Communication Tools (Pat's Garage)

Pat Cadam is one of the most admirable business owners I know. His customers are extremely loyal for one simple reason: they trust everyone who works there. Pat has carefully hired employees who share his values of honesty, quality, and balancing work with other aspects of life. As we develop his communication tools, we also refine how these values are reflected in everything about the shop. Here are some examples.

We started with a friendly logo that reminds people of the days when service stations really cared about service.

We had plans to do an ad campaign, print service reminder postcards, build a website, hold free women's car clinics, film festivals, Friends of Pat's Propeller Recycling Club, you know.

But before designing all that, I needed to get to know the shop a little better, so I took a bunch of pictures. Many of these ended up in the website, but more importantly, they gave me a deeper understanding of who works at Pat's and what it feels like for people come to the space.

And I talked to a bunch of his customers who consistently confirmed that Pat's is a place you can trust.

Through photography I discovered the little things that tell about who works there. Pat considers many subtle elements of the environment, including the quality of light.

.. and the quality of the coffee of course.

Every new customer is sent a card asking for feedback. Our design made a few statements. Pat's cares about what you think, they care about the environment, and they are a little whacky. Along with a whimsical rating system, the card also asks for poetry or recipes. You should see Pat's growing collection. It not only provides insight into the customers, it makes his employees feel great!

1. Hand written address.

2. A nice thank you note.

3. Witty survey on the inside.

4. Turn the card over and reinsert the tab into the slot...

5. ... and it's ready to drop in the mailbox.

"I was a late bloomer. David taught me to talk. We then moved on to email. When I had a mid-life crisis asking, 'who am I?' David gave me a logo, a website and a culinary appreciation for Spam [the food]. Without David's branding and communication tools I would be just another empty, voiceless business owner"

–Pat Cadam

When they moved, they sent a postcard offering $20 off the next visit, and when the Bay Guardian readers voted them Best of the Bay they sent another.

And then there is the website.
